Loose and free

Boy, I was really getting into the rough handling of the charcoal on this one. Too bad I forgot about the face until the end. I really like the deep shadows, the weight of the figure and the loose handling of the medium. It seemed to open me up for the rest of the night.

Skip?

The nose reminds me of Malcolm Liepke's art. Not a bad thing in my mind.

Looking back

I wanted to have a less defined back but am not sure I pulled off the look I was trying for. Her head drifted and caused me some grief but still...

Scratchings

I was feeling my way around this drawing and really got into the process. Not sure the end product is what I hoped for but I really liked the journey getting there.

Some gestures to get the week started

Another great job from Sarah. We all appreciate her taking time away from getting her son's birthday party prepared. Thank you, Sarah and Happy Birthday to your son.

Last sketch of the night

Would like to have had a bit more time (a familiar plaint) but was fairly happy with this one.

Hmmm, maybe I spoke too soon

Actually, I think I like today's better than yesterday's. Lot's of nice dimension to this one. Yesterday's, today's and tomorrow's posts all had an extra five minutes to develop. Makes a difference, don't you think?

Black choker

Probably my favorite drawing of the night. I kind of keyed on the black choker, must have been some subconscious nudge brought on by Andrew Wyeth's beautiful painting of Helga titled "Black Velvet". One of my favorite artists.

Two mediocre ones

make for one okay post. The second image sure has some proportion problems. Tomorrow starts the second half of the session and I'm much happier with the three from that portion of the night.

Sittin' around

wondering when these artists will be done with this one. I always wonder what goes through the model's head when taking a pose. Long division? Perhaps their grocery list? It makes me all the more thankful that they come and make the time for us. I know I couldn't do it.

Slow start

This drawing just kind of went nowhere. Made for a slow start to the evening. But things picked up later.

Sara redux

Sara has again graced us with her poses and we are very grateful for that. Here are the gestures from last night.

Last weeks last drawing

I was really enjoying this drawing. Lot's of great lines and shapes to work with. But now it's time to focus on a new set of drawings. I'll share them tomorrow.

Two more for Wednesday

Again with the time thing. I liked where both of these were going, just got too involved in the details and decided to forgo the overall figure. Old dog / new tricks and all of that, right?

Seated repose

How artsy of a title is that?! I would love to have had more time on this one. Really liked the classic feel of the pose and I think that I really would have had a ball finishing the face. Lot's to like in this one, but mostly from a "what could have been" frame of mind.

Always a favorite

If you've blurked around on this blog you'll probably notice I really enjoy drawing backs. I'm sure I've expounded on it many times but there is just something elegant about the human back. I almost get into a meditative state when drawing them. Eh, or maybe I just don't have to concern myself with a likeness.

A bit rusty...

but I think I surprised myself with how easy it was to get back into it. As the week progresses I hope you will agree.

Back to business

Ah, it's good to get back to normal with the Black Hand Group. Here are the gestures from last night.

Pardon the interruption

I am having OSX problems with my system and will not be posting until they are resolved. Sheesh, I had no idea how connected I was to this virtual world until I couldn't use it.

Progress

Pretty enjoyable getting to watch a drawing progress rather than wondering when the time is going to run out.  Sitting back and studying the piece and making informed rather than rushed decisions is pretty exciting and satisfying.  A little frustrating though, to be intentionally taking the time to do it.  But that's the experiment.

Start of something new

I'm gonna post a work in progress and see how far I can take this before I either ruin it or decide it's done.  I don't get to do this often and since we have a couple of weeks without life drawing I thought I'd give it a try.

Okay, not interesting but...

it is something new.  A rep for one of the lines we carry at the store has a small, furry dog.  Uh huh, my lovely wife thought I should do a drawing for her.  So I get a half to (maybe) three quarter inch jpeg printed off the company inkjet on generic paper.  So this is the result.  As if drawing white, curly fur isn't enough of a challenge.  Anyhow, here you go.
