Another partial study

I would really love to have had another ten or so minutes to work both hands out. This one was really starting to work for me.

Give it up for the old stuff

I hope my records are straight and I haven't shown this one before. A lot of lost edges and lines going nowhere. Not too bad but I am looking forward to tomorrow night and drawing again. Although I am finally finishing up a painting I've been working on and fixing another (Santa Claus) one that's been done for a few years.

Head Study

Heavy handed but, as I've said before, it all depends on the pose. I guess focusing on such a small area gave me a bit more time to "noodle" this drawing.

Older stuff

This one had a lot of potential, just not a lot of time. The face could have used a little more attention but that's the facts of life when it comes to our Black Hand Group.

Best of the night

This is more like it. I love studies that aren't complete figures. Focusing on a section of the figure and delving into it is both my favorite way of composing a drawing and also my favorite types of drawings created by others.

Startin' to click

I'm pretty happy with this one. Overworked? Maybe. But I really opened my eyes and allowed myself to just keep layering onto this one. I know I've said it before but the human back is like a landscape and with all of the masses laying on top of one another I can get lost in the abstract shapes and bringing it all together as a recognizable human figure. How much fun is that?!

Terrible angle for this pose. Just wasn't inspiring me so I think I just went through the motions. Lots of mass but not much interest.

Not much to say. I tried something and it failed.

Study

I like the old world nature of this little study. No reason to finish this one, just explore the intricacies of a small portion of the human body.

Back to business

As I said in a previous post, being so familiar with model gives me the freedom to isolate areas of interest and not worry about a finished image. Here I became intrigued with the shadows on the left side of the face. Probably should have taken a couple of seconds to at least block in the right eye, though.

Happy Father's Day

to any and all who happen to be a dad. To my dad, thanks for supporting my dreams both in the beginning and now. It has always meant a lot.

Sculptural

Seeing as Jeff is a sculptor by trade it only seemed fitting to use big strokes to carve out the image. That is exactly how it felt, as if I were making cuts in clay and forming a dimensional piece rather than merely rendering what I saw before me. This wasn't the case with all of the drawings as you'll see. I tend to bounce around with my technique, being driven by the pose that I find in front of me.

Last night at the local art museum

Gestures, as usual. Jeff stepped in when Sara was unable to model for us. I've been drawing Jeff for ten or eleven years so when one is as familiar with a subject as that, you tend to allow yourself to stray from your comfort zone and not try to produce the perfect drawing every time. And when that happens good drawings tend to show up. Check them out as the week progresses.

Nothing to say about this one. Pedestrian at best. Still the big strokes and, once again, an unfinished face.

Lost edges, lost opportunity

Wish I'd finished the face on this one. Love the heavy shadows and the lost edges.

Another fave

I really like the mass that I built up in this one. The heavier stroke technique adds to the weight created in this drawing and using the lost edges enhances what I like about this sketch.

Coulda, shoulda...

but didn't pull it off. Love the pose and the shadows. Wish I had gotten the face finished but... well, I didn't.

Favorite of the evening

A bit blocky but I like the feeling this one gives. The tilt of the head, the loose strands of hair, the introspective look on her face.

So so execution. All poses were ten minutes, a bit of a departure for us. Can't blame time restrictions on this one. Must have been that "Massive Head Trauma" from our favorite micro brewery, Angry Hank's.

As per usual, gestures to start with. Sara's back and doing her always great job. Hopefully the early trip to Angry Hank's didn't make for a lackluster effort on my part. Check back every day to make your own judgment.

Out of the shadows

From a few weeks ago. I like how the figure emerges from the cast shadow. I have several similar images with various models and they all rank among my favorite images. Maybe not the best rendered images but certainly strong visuals.

Very relaxed

This was the final pose of this particular session, a time the models usually take it a bit easier. I like the simplicity of the rendering and the softness of the technique. A silhouette that's not a true silhouette...

Pushing ahead

From a few weeks ago. This was one of my favorite drawings of the past few months. I like the elegance of the lines and the manner in which the weight shifts within the figure.

Again with the angst

The pose reflects the angst the artists feel when trying to draw this. So many problems to deal with and only seven minutes to solve them. I think I gave up rather quickly on this one.

Simple is as simple does

Not too many poses more simply elegant than a prone back shot. Large masses and, in this case, long shapes with little more than minimal shading and a small amount of line work. I really like this piece.

saved just for this reason. Didn't have access to the room last night so no new drawings. I'll post some leftovers from the last couple of months.

I like the way I rendered the figure but not the face, a bit too exaggerated.

Favorite of the night

Just a simple back shot that became my best drawing of the evening. I really liked the rendering of the model's head. The movement from the base of the skull through the neck and culminating below the barrel of mouth particularly interested me. I had fun with this one.
