Suspicious mind

A little nod to Elvis, there. This didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped it would. I think I had problems with the proportions. It may have stemmed from the model's head moving slightly over the length of the pose, not uncommon when the neck has to turn so much.

Back to the wall

I skipped the one following the sketch from yesterday, I'll put that in the back log file. This one is much better, one I wish would have gotten finished. The subtle shifts in her shoulders and hips really made this an interesting pose.

The classic back pose

Another quick sketch. Sorry for the poor quality this week, I was in a hurry with a trip to Washington state with my son and just kinda blew through the photo session.

Curious

I was a little slow on the "draw" with this five minute sketch. Don't know what I was thinking but it wasn't about getting the image done, that's for sure.

I didn't think it was that cold in the studio

A five minute sketch. I actually liked the whole pose but felt I had to isolate an area of interest in order to have a respectable drawing.

A little preoccupied this week, resulting in a mediocre effort. sigh

Wednesday's sketch

Went a bit crazy on this one. Probably should have gotten all of the parts knocked in before I went off the reservation with the modeling of the figure. Still, another fun drawing to do.

Gruff

A little on the illustrative side with that 'stache, but that's what makes this one I had fun with. I like all of the planes and shapes that layer upon themselves to form a sense of weight and depth. As I said, fun.

Now for the tens

Some odd negative space I left, cutting into the left hand and creating a broken look to the whole arm. Alas, that's just how it goes.

The last of the fives

Another simple drawing where I left a lot of negative space and detailed only a couple of areas of interest. Kind of an odd but interesting flow to this one.

Welcome back, Bob

The gestures from last night, decided to cut it down from 10 one minute poses to 5. Don't think it hurt my later drawings.

Classic pose

Can't go wrong with the classics. One of our artists brought in a magazine and picked a couple of poses. I've always been partial to this particular pose, probably for the simplicity of it.

Arch

Fun pose to draw. I like the strong graphic element of the draped robe over the pillows that creates the arch of her back. I probably should have finished the pillow that created the flattened area of her butt though. Looks a bit odd. Overall, I think this was a decent effort.

Pillows

Using the pillows and drapery as a negative space was a bit of a challenge and cut the figure kind of oddly. Not sure if it works.

On to the tens

Just a little ten minute head study. Not my favorite sketch but I had fun with the rendering.

The other five minutes

I had a blast rendering the sketch above. Using the side of the conte crayon I just focused on the shadows to start with and formed the figure accordingly. I threw a couple of holding lines in just out of habit but I really only wanted the forms to be the defining element of the piece.

A couple more

This one was our model during break. I liked the feet emerging from the folds of her robe and the abstract manner of the layers of said robe.
This one is a standard back pose that I seem to have softened more than I intended. Not sure what I was going for here but the shadow on her face seemed be important to me.

Very relaxed

I really enjoyed this pose and spent a bit more time on it than usual. Lots of shapes to play with.

It's getting better all the ti-i-ime. Better... better... behh-ter. Okay, so I'm not all here today. Sue me.

Simple pose, simple drawing. Tried to immediately loosen up and went a bit overboard.

Was a little precious out of the gate with this one. As usual, took a bit of time to warm up, especially after missing a week.

Thanks to our wonderful model, Sara, for getting us back to work. Missing a week really isn't any fun.

Way back

This is probably eight or nine years old. I loved the challenge of drawing a pregnant woman and have only had that opportunity a few times. I have always wanted to draw a woman through all the stages of her pregnancy, probably a result of following Jeff Jones for so many years.

A little cheesecake

An archived sketch of Sara. This pose reminds me of Elvgren and the great pinups of the old days. Not that I'm anywhere in that league, mind you, but Sara could have modeled for them.
