Long ago...

this was my favorite model. She has since moved on to a music career on the West Coast. But I did get a lot of great drawings with her as the subject.

Keepin' the old stuff goin'

Again with the nearly 10 year old stuff. Much tighter back in the day.

Long ago

This one may be ten years old or more. I was using newsprint from the end of rolls at the Billings Gazette at the time. This stuff was very slick and made for a great surface to blend on. However, it doesn't hold up to time and turns yellow. This doesn't bother me but seems to annoy viewers of the original. Alas, it merely stays in my flat file.

Braid

I was unable to attend the last session and this weeks has been canceled due to the space being unavailable. Why tell you this? Because I now have to go into my files and pull out unposted images. This is from a couple of weeks ago. I think my favorite part of this drawing is her foot. I love the complexity of the foot in general. I only wish I had a flair for drawing hands...

Concentration

I am taking a break for a few days so this will be the last entry for a few days.

White chalk and broad strokes

One of the better ones from the evening. Lots of great shapes to draw.

Profile

Tyson has great features to draw, very exaggerated. Makes it easy to find interesting shapes to draw.

Looking ahead

After this they get better, I promise.

Gonna skip

I'm jumping to the better ones, of which this is just okay, and not show the customary warm up sketches. I just did head studies so I was a bit more focused than usual. Hopefully by the end of these you'll see that I did finally focus.

Ten minutes of gestures

The only figurative work I would do last night. The rest of the evening I focused on the model's head.

Nearly complete

I should go back in on this one and add the hint of a face. I really like how this one was turning out. A little bit of white chalk to "pop" the drawing a bit.

Bottom up

I found most of the interest in this piece at the bottom of the figure. I was having fun with this and wish it would have lasted long enough to finish.

Peek

Interesting little study, almost abstract. Compact poses seem to present problems with perception, making one look harder at the familiar shapes seen in not so familiar ways. The fact that I didn't include the leg to give a better point of reference (a conscious decision) only lends to the unfamiliar viewpoint.

The Braid

Nice, simple lines. Classic pose with the braid draped down her torso.

Remebrance

Quiet reflection is what is called for on this day. Never forget.

A new night, a new set of drawings

Quiet contemplation

I've probably used that title before but I'm not really in a clever mood today. The drawing was a nice surprise to me. It was a fun exercise.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda

I woulda had a very nice drawing if there were more time. I coulda had a better drawing if I concentrated on a smaller area of interest. I shoulda taken photo reference of this pose for a painting at a later date. Get the idea that I think this was a lost opportunity?

Simple

Nice big shapes, good lighting and some interesting angles made this pose a fun one to draw. Funny how one of the first things I blocked in were the feet and I never really got back to them. Usually I enjoy the complexity of the foot but I guess I just was having too much fun with the rest of the drawing.

A little portrait

I love the light touch I used on this drawing, too bad it really doesn't look like Sara. I became enamored with the technique that I didn't go back in and make the changes needed. I just let the drawing become itself. Happens sometimes.

Making the most of the time

I really am happy with this drawing. Simple back pose with some strong elements that worked perfectly with the five minute time allotment. Big strokes and big shapes make for a fun sketch.

A fiver

A basic little sketch. I like the shapes and the lines in this one and feel pretty good about it. I've begun slowing down (I believe I've brought this up before) and don't feel like I'm putting as much into each piece as I previously (5 - 10 years ago) had. A shame that I can't figure out how to bring back that kind of confidence to my work.

More Sara

Gestures, a Friday staple. Used a lot of vine charcoal last night. Kinda fun
