Last Night in the studio

Worked on this while sitting on the couch in front of HGTV.  Lots of mistakes.  Luckily it is just a prep sketch.

And so it begins.  Trying to get a jump on the annual "Santa Sketches" that I sell at our gallery during the holidays.

Basic torso study

I had done enough head studies so I just left his head off of this one.

More squiggly lines

One of those drawings that is primarily the single line exercise.

Lines, lines

Everywhere there's lines.  Okay, a bit of liberty with that lyric.  Still, I like how this one came out.  Reminds me of some of those old ads with Bob Peak drawings.  Just the random-ish line work in the face.

I had a need for a different approach.  Did a lot of head studies.

One of my favorites

I'm just happy with all aspects of this sketch.  The pose is wonderful and I didn't feel the need to shade the line drawing and let it stand on its own.

Sketch to finish

The drawing from the session and the finish from my studio.  I tried not to change too much about the sketch as I finished just to see what I did wrong.  The portrait was probably my best start and finish.

Classic repose

An older piece that seems to have the feel of old school.

More from the vault.  I love working with conté and this looks to have been one of those poses I really had fun with.

Glad I ran out of time with this one.  I wouldn't have wanted to just doodle it to death.

Quick

Simple strokes to create a simple sketch.

Strong right arm

Perhaps an over idealized version of the forearm but it was fun to draw.  Lots of great shapes running across them bones.

Simple and mindful of the larger shapes.

A back in progress

Big, simple forms starting to take shape.  I like seeing the path to a finished drawing represented in moment.

Some new stuff at last

After a month off The Black Hand Group got back together to draw again.  Here is the first effort after the layoff.  Bit rusty, sure, but it sure felt good to get back to the drawing board.

Missing the dancer

Our dancer was a really outstanding model.  I hope she's doing well in her new home.

I must've been comfortable the night I drew this.  Seems fairly finished.

Ugh... Monday

I sympathize with our model.  After a long weekend I'm not too thrilled to be back to work, either.

Way back

This was done at least 9 years ago.  The paper is newsprint, the kind that I used to get for free from the docks at the Gazette... the end rolls.  Loved the smooth finish but it tends to yellow and, obviously, buckle and wrinkle.
