My submission to the Brinton 101 small works show

My studio is a wreck since we just finished moving to a new home.  Covid has wreaked havoc on The Black Hand Group (as well as just about everything else on the planet) so I just haven't been posting much.  I hope to get the studio up and running this weekend assuming we can track down a water leak that is preventing me from getting set up.  In the meantime, here are the three "miniatures" that I sent down to Big Horn, Wyoming to the Brinton Museum for the annual 101 show.

Playing with ink again.

Just thought I'd try and get my hand back into some pen and ink.  It's been fun so far.  I have a couple other drawings ready to be inked, this was just a tryout.  Some of it worked, some of it... didn't.

Another charcoal on toned paper sketch.  Not, in my opinion, as successful as the previous sketch.

Something new

I'm playing around with toned papers and charcoal with the accent of white conté to "pop" it.

On the Drawing Board

This is a prep sketch for another drawing. Graphite is not my preferred medium but since this will be redrawn in charcoal I just wanted to get a feel as this image will be one of three for an upcoming show.  Just need it to be right.

Two different takes on the Native American maiden

A couple of older paintings exploring the same theme.  I have always been partial to "Maiden Yewessay", the lower of the two pieces.  The reference was less precise and let me play more with the image, especially the very abstract/impressionistic background.

Old painting

Long suffering piece that I finally finished 5 or 6 years ago.  Decided to detail the dress and change the background and lo & behold it popped.  Well, popped enough for someone to buy.  I hope she is happy in her home.

Trying to become a bit more comfortable with the grey paper and white chalk.  I like his eye and the hair.  The rest could use some work.

My contribution

MSU-B has an annual Food & Wine Festival and I have been donating a piece for the past few years.  This is "The Elder",  a charcoal drawing measuring 7 x 9.5.

Buffalo Blanket

This will be in our gallery in time for ArtWalk.  Oil, 41x21.  Time to move on to something else.

Just finished

This is a reworking of an older piece.  Pretty happy with how this has finally come together.  I had a lot of fun with the buckskin dress and all of the ragged edges.  This will end up in my gallery among some new pieces from Pacific Green.  We're very excited to be debuting this line at our store and I'm glad I was able to finish this painting in time to accompany the grand unveiling.
