More stuff

A couple of head studies.  The top piece is in oil and both are on view at Roots in the gallery.

The long pose with, you guessed it...

...an overly rendered knee!  I really like most of this drawing.  I didn't get to work on her face much, though.

Long pose...

...that didn't turn out so well.  I got lost in the details and fun shadows and didn't take the time to really nail the proportions.

Thanksgiving wiped out The Black Hand Group, so...

...I'll post a few more of the Christmas sketches that are currently up for sale at Roots.

From our Sunday session

An hour study.  I think I went a bit overboard with the white pastel.  Still, pretty happy with the likeness.

Toned drawing

Need to work more on this one.  Is got some potential.  However, it was just a warm up for the Sunday drawings that were to come.

Olivia in grey

This was all about the shadows.  Fun if ultimately unsuccessful.

Finally starting to get a feel for things

I only got to spend about 30 seconds on her face in this long pose but I finally feel like I might be getting a bit of a grip on things again.  I expect that I'll still be a bit uncomfortable for another couple of weeks but at least there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel.

I'll start posting everything again starting Friday, good... bad... or ugly.  Sketch shaming may work for me, we'll see.

My submission to the Brinton 101 small works show

My studio is a wreck since we just finished moving to a new home.  Covid has wreaked havoc on The Black Hand Group (as well as just about everything else on the planet) so I just haven't been posting much.  I hope to get the studio up and running this weekend assuming we can track down a water leak that is preventing me from getting set up.  In the meantime, here are the three "miniatures" that I sent down to Big Horn, Wyoming to the Brinton Museum for the annual 101 show.

It's that time of year again...

I'm in the middle of my annual blitzkrieg of Santa drawings.  This time they will be displayed and on sale at The Moss Mansion starting sometime in early November.  This one is a little 4x4 pencil sketch on toned paper with conté accents and white pastel.

Tayla in grey

Charcaol on grey toned paper with white pastel highlights. I follow artist Daniel Maidman on Instagram and just felt like I should try using toned paper during a life drawing session.  A fun exercise that I need to do more often.  I work this way at home quite a lot but I'm not sure the last time I did this live.  Again, Tayla did a great job.

Something a bit different

This week marks the 53rd anniversary of Star Trek's premier.  This sketch is based on our favorite Vulcan from the very first episode "The Cage", which finally made it to the small screen in the form of the two part episode "The Menagerie".  I had fun with this one and I hope to do some more like it.  Maybe the whole crew of the Enterprise and some other celebrity types.  I like the "Peak" style that I hit upon.  Couldn't help but feel like I was channeling the movie posters of the first 6 films.

Weason, Shoshoni warrior

Another charcoal on toned paper sketch.  Not, in my opinion, as successful as the previous sketch.

Something new

I'm playing around with toned papers and charcoal with the accent of white conté to "pop" it.

The Stalker

Just a little sketch on toned paper.

Another animal sketch

Grey on gray... Grey Wolf stalking in the snow.  This was fun as wolves usually are.

Big Horn in grey

A sketch from last night.  Gonna make another run at it this weekend.
