Gestures of Lady O

I have moved the drawing group into an every other week schedule for the summer.  These are the gestures from the first meeting of the new schedule.  Felt good to be drawing from life again.

A little head study with most of my attention on the shadows.  I like this approach and should probably do more like it.  Appeals to the illustration side of me.

A good start

I'm happy with the subtlety in this but I wonder how this would turn out if I go back in on it.

Barely started.  I think this could have been a decent little sketch had I been afforded a bit more time.

This painting has gone through a couple of changes.  Been having some fun with it lately and this is where is "stands".

The sketches for the comps

Been having fun with the Apes stuff.  I have the main characters pretty well the way I want them and now need to move onto the background elements.  Once I have done the comps for them I will  move onto the finished illustration.  This has been a long gestating project that hit a few bumps.  I had hoped to produce something for sale but it looks like there are a few too many hurdles to this so I'll just do it for myself.

Had an absolute blast drawing this one.  The shadows were so much fun to render.

Concept painting

I had to change up the concept a bit and the layout as well.  Kept the basic two head design, just lost Taylor in favor of a mash-up of Dr. Zaius and Virgil, the above image.

Foreshortening

Long pose.  I really get frustrated when all my measuring is correct and the end result just doesn't look right.

Torso

More of the isolated vignette style of sketching.  Sure, time has a lot to do with it.  I have to make a choice on whether to knock in a full figure or try to get something interesting on paper.

Right leg

I love unfinished studies.  Just something about the focus and all that empty space.

Head Study

The start of a head study.  The model's features were smaller than I'm used to and that made for many corrections, hence the small amount of finish to this little 5 minute sketch.

Gestures of our newest model

Lady O made her Black Hand debut last night and, judging by some of the drawings I was able to see, she was a hit.  I know I had fun drawing.

More from the archives

We only had this model once and that wasn't enough.  She had terrific muscle tone some interesting features.  Too bad.
