Older stuff

More drawings.  Seems to be a theme here, don't it.  Well, for me any way, the human form is the most endlessly fascinating subject and drawing is the most direct manner to express myself.  I'm not trying to find the deeper meaning in my work, just to explore the lines I make as they relate to the figure.  You may notice that I don't always (rarely, in fact) get all of the figure into the drawing.  That's because I get lost in the little areas that just grab my attention and won't let go until the pose is over.  Enjoy the fruits of my labor.

Some color

Now for a little change of pace.  I do dabble in painting and will post from time to time some of my oils.  Of course, they are figurative.  "Model Portrait" was from a workshop I took from Carolyn Anderson.  It was phenomenal and I would recommend her to any and all who have the chance to study with her.  "Blue Dress" now hangs in a private collection along with some of my drawings.

Last nights session

I will try to post work from the previous night's session each Friday (uh huh, right).  Here are a few from last night.  Jeff has been modeling for us ever since we began over five years ago.  He is also one of the regular artists and my gallery, Gallery Interiors, represents his work as well.  He has been modeling for the local university for many years and we feel fortunate to have such a seasoned pro in our ranks.  Drawings of him will (and already have) pop up with some frequency on this blog.  Thanks, Jeff.

More from the flat file

If you check in with this blog regularly you will find that it is pretty heavy on the life drawing. That's because I have roughly nine years of figure studies jamming my flat files and I am a big proponent of figure art.  So I shall be sharing my passion with whomever is similarly moved by the art of the human form.  Yes, there will be other things sprinkled here and there, some of my illustration work (hence the name of my business) from the last 20+ years, a bit of painting (figurative and portrait, naturally), and even some cartooning.

From the files

More figure work.  You may notice that my style changes a bit.  Sometimes it is due to the materials, at what point we are in the session or the time limit.  Or maybe, just maybe, it could be that I'm moody and need to change things up.  Enjoy.

same ol, same ol

I can honestly say that the drawings you see here and all of the life drawings you have seen in previous posts can be, in a very large part, attributed to Susan Moore, my drawing instructor at Washington University in St. Louis way back in 1983-1984.  Her encouragement and pressure to reach beyond my fears of not being as good as the others (and I wasn't) gave me the drive to pursue my obsession with figure drawing.  Thank you, Susan.

Back to life drawing

A little bit about myself.  As you can see from the posts previous, I love life drawing.  But to get to that point I had to see what else I thought I wanted to do.  I went to school with a vague idea about being an artist.  A couple years later I focused on comic book art and attended the Kubert school in New Jersey.  From there I used what I learned and opened my own studio, the Illustration Booth and pursued freelance illustration and graphic design.  I still do freelance but also have worked for various businesses requiring an artist.  About a year and a half ago my wife and I opened an art gallery / fine furniture store, Gallery Interiors, here in Billings.  I maintain a blog for our store as well.
I'm sure as time goes by I will fill in some of the blanks, give kudos to those who helped me along the way and share some of the events that got me to this point.  Until then, enjoy the art and feel free to comment on anything you see.  Thank you for stopping by.

Sketch cards part 1

Here are some examples of the latest Star Wars cards that I did for Topps.  I believe these were posted on the Scoundrel board so if you've seen them, sorry.  But return soon for more.  I will post my six return cards for your viewing pleasure.  In the meantime, enjoy.

more scribbles...

I will start to mix up the work with some cards I have done for Topps and their sketchcard series for various entertainment properties.  In the meantime, here are some more figure drawings.  Most of the drawings are executed in five or ten minutes.

Gonna run out of titles quick, me thinks...

More drawings from the Black Hand Group.  We meet every Thursday night at the Yellowstone Art Museum to hone our abilities, connect with peers and meet new artists who decide to give the group a try.

Daily Drawing

I hope to be posting at least one drawing a day from my backlog of figure drawings.  I organize a drawing session with a group of artists here in Billings, Montana.  The local museum graciously allows us the use of one of their rooms for our gatherings.  I want to thank the Yellowstone Art Museum for hosting us the past five years.
Please enjoy my doodles and check back for more if you are so inclined.  I will also be posting some of my illustration work when I get around to it.

I hope the work I post here meets with your approval.  Check back soon.
